The February 2018 A Place to Listen concert is being curated by Victoria-based composer, clarinetist, and APTL Ensemble member Nathan Friedman. The program centres around the work and influence of nineteenth century Hungarian composer Franz Liszt and will feature works by Franz Liszt and Leo Svirsky, as well as a world premiere by Nathan Friedman dedicated to the APTL Ensemble.
"The late music of Franz Liszt has always been very influential on my work," says Nathan. "It presents a highly enigmatic soundworld that is alternately stark and lyrical, often sounding decades ahead of its time. When I discovered that Leo Svirsky wrote a piece strongly connected to late Liszt, in particular one that included clarinet, I knew that I wanted to include it with my upcoming work for the same instrumentation.
My new work, l'œ, is based on Stéphane Mallarmé’s book-length poem Pour un tombeau d'Anatole, a series of pieces exploring aspects of mourning in music. l'œ is an adaptation for clarinet, violin, piano, and sine tones, dedicated to the APTL Ensemble."
This concert will be performed by the APTL Ensemble, featuring Nathan Friedman (clarinet), Hollas Longton (violin), Daniel Brandes (piano), and Christopher Reiche Boucher (piano).
