OPERA REMIX: OPERA MEETS GOSPEL!
10th Anniversary Gala Concert
Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir, Artist In Residence Crystal Hicks and special guests, Chelsea Rus - Soprano, Jonny Michel - Tenor and Dale Throness - Baritone, join together to present the "Good Noise" brand of gospel music and to pay special tribute to one of Canada's acclaimed African Canadian classical singers, Portia White - contralto (1911-1968). White has been called "the singer who broke the colour barrier in Canadian classical music". She was well known for not only her classical repertoire, but also singing Spirituals, the musical genre that bridged songs from Slavery to present day gospel music via the classical concert stage.
In addition to White, the choir also pays tribute to renowned American classical and operatic singers such as Marian Anderson and Robert McFerrin Sr (Bobby McFerrin's father) and composer/arranger Harry T. Burleigh who were musical pioneers in the transition and development of Spirituals as part of gospel music history. And for the contemporary gospel music enthusiast, we'll include your favourites from our last 10 years plus a few new surprises. Join us May 31st for our 10th Anniversary Season-end celebration.
