Come out and witness the Vancouver leg of the national competition and vote for the poet to go on to represent B.C. in Toronto! The poets were selected based on the diversity of their writing and performance skills, so variety is a guaranteed plus to this competition. This year, the poets have been given the topic of BELONGING as their subject matter.
Mostly, this night is all about having fun…fun for you, the audience, and fun for the writers!
And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for – the participants!
Shane Koyczan is the first international performer to win the highly coveted Individual Championship title at the National Poetry Slam 2000. He has also been a national finalist 4 times placing in the top 6 of North America every year he has competed. Shane bested over 250 competing poets from all over North America at the world's largest performance poetry competition. In addition, Shane is the only non American Slam Champion in the history of the competition.Born in Yellowknife, Shane attended the Creative Writing program at Okanagan University College. He is the winner of the Leonard Cohen Award for Best Song, the James Elroy Award for Best Voice and the W.B. Yeats Award for Best Poem, all while working in a video store to support his writing habit.
Skeena Reece is a Tsimshian and Cree performance and media artist based in Vancouver. Currently she is studying at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in the Media Art Program. Skeena performs spoken word shows with a touch of music flavour and sometimes an improvisational skit with an audience member. People describe her shows as inspirational, raw, elevating and you know, "I'm writing my own bio, eh?"
Poet, humourist, illustrator and teacher, Alexandra Oliver was born in Vancouver, BC in 1970. In 1993, she was named by The Vancouver Sun as one of Vancouver's ten most promising new artists. Her work has appeared in numerous journals and publications in Europe and North America, as well as on CBC Radio, CKNW and in the 1998 Paul Devlin documentary Slam Nation.
Tanya Evanson is a Lover, Writer and Griot. She flies in Vancouver BC on the wings of Mother Tongue Media. Even when you sense apocalypse, pluck some of it off the ground and feast.
R.C. Weslowski will add his own special surreal seasonings to this years face-off. One of the most unconventional poets, and equally genius unconventional thinkers of our times. R.C. is a veteran of the Vancouver Slam Team, has appeared as a special guest spoken word artist at events too innumerable to mention...When he's in the room, you never know what to expect, and ain't that just the right idea comin' from a poet?
