ABOUT
******************************************************************
WALLGRIN
Harsh screeches, angelic choirs, mangled noises and soaring strings — Wallgrin creates a contemporary soundtrack for ancient mythologies. The art-pop solo project of composer, vocalist and violinist Tegan Wahlgren, Wallgrin delves into the space between beauty and dissonance through layers of strings and exploratory vocals. Drawing from an array of musical influences — including fiddling and choral singing — Wallgrin melds fragments of myths to form the music of an indistinct and personal folklore.
ALVARO ROJAS
Alvaro Rojas is a composer and guitarist based in Vancouver B.C. His pieces have been performed by many of Canada’s finest new music groups, including the Turning Point Ensemble, Aventa Ensemble, Microcosmos String Quartet and others. He has scored numerous short films and performs regularly in the Lower Mainland leading his own groups and within various local music communities. For the Sawdust Collector new works series, he will be previewing music from an upcoming release in various intimate and stripped down formats.
On December 11th, Alvaro Rojas will be performing with Meredith Bates, James Meger, Liam MacDonald, and Sam Cartwright.
KATE FRANKLIN
Kate Franklin is a dance artist who has been working on contemporary dance for around 18 years. She collaborates most frequently with Justine A. Chambers and Tara Cheyenne Performance and jumps at every chance she gets to work with Valerie Calam (Company Vice Versa) in Toronto. She is beginning her third season as Associate Director of Modus Operandi and is inspired every day by Tiffany Tregarthen, David Raymond and every MO student.
JAMIE ROBINSON
Jamie Robinson is a Vancouver based contemporary dance artist. Jamie has studied at Modus Operandi Contemporary Dance Training Program and EDAM. As an independent artist she has recently had the pleasure of apprenticing for Tara Cheyenne Fredienberg. She has performed in festivals and events such as FUSE, Vancouver International Dance Festival, Dance Allsorts, and The Choreographers Walk. As a choreographer, Jamie has been commissioned to create work for Festival of Recorded Movement and selected to participate in Dance Victoria’s Choreographic Lab.
Last year, Kate and Jamie, started working together in a creation process that felt collaborative, considerate, and non-hierarchical. They showed the fruits of this research at Sawdust Collector in March 2018. This fall, thay are diving back in again. All they know so far is that they want to continue with Jamie in the role of choreographer and Kate in the role of performer/interpreter and that their shared interests in challenging these structures and the inherent hierarchy within them will lead them into a truly collaborative process. They are excited to work together this fall, and to check in with Sawdust Collector audiences three different times along the way.
Kate and Jamie received support for this process from Tara Cheyenne Performance's Startle Reflex residency at Left of Main
